How to Create Soft, Bouncy Volume
A beautiful blowout is all about the preparation, the right products and giving the hair time to set. Rita shares her approach to creating soft, full-bodied volume, smooth movement and that polished, expensive-looking finish at home.
The secret to a beautiful blowout
The most beautiful blowouts are not simply about making the hair look bigger. They are about creating volume at the roots, movement through the lengths and a smooth, polished finish that still feels soft and natural.
For long, thick hair, the right preparation makes all the difference. Lightweight styling products provide support, a round brush helps shape the hair, and a roller allows the finished section to cool into place.
Rita’s approach combines professional blow-drying technique with a few simple steps that can help your style last longer.
01
Start with the right wash routine
Begin with clean hair and choose a shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type and the result you want.
For a voluminous finish, Rita uses System Professional Volume Shampoo with Hydrate Conditioner. The aim is to prepare the hair without leaving it feeling unnecessarily heavy.
Apply conditioner mainly through the mid-lengths and ends, adjusting the amount to your hair’s needs. Rinse thoroughly so that the hair is ready for styling.
Every head of hair is different. If your hair is particularly fine, thick, dry or prone to becoming weighed down, your stylist can help you choose the most suitable cleansing and conditioning routine.
02
Apply mousse to damp hair
After gently removing excess water with a towel, distribute mousse through damp hair, working it from the roots towards the ends.
Mousse helps provide body, support and styling control. Work in manageable sections and distribute the product evenly rather than concentrating too much in one area.
Use an amount appropriate for your hair’s length and density. Too much product can leave the hair feeling stiff or overloaded, while too little may not provide the support you need.
03
Rough-dry to approximately 80%
Use your hairdryer to remove most of the moisture before beginning the detailed round-brush work.
Aim for approximately 80% dry hair. Keep the dryer moving and direct the airflow down the hair shaft where practical, helping the surface look smoother.
This step saves time when you begin sectioning and shaping the hair. The hair should still have enough moisture to be shaped effectively with the brush, but it should not be soaking wet.
04
Create the foundation with dry shampoo
Rita’s technique includes applying dry shampoo at the roots before the round-brush stage.
Use a light, controlled application, following the product instructions and allowing it to settle before brushing through if needed. Concentrate on the areas where you want extra lift and grip rather than coating the entire head.
Dry shampoo can help absorb excess oil and provide texture, but it is not a substitute for washing. Avoid excessive layering, particularly if your scalp is sensitive or your hair already has product build-up.
05
Work section by section with a round brush
This is where the shape begins to take form.
Divide the hair into manageable sections. Using a round brush and hairdryer, lift each section from the roots and guide the hair smoothly through the lengths.
For a bouncy blowout, focus on root direction, brush tension and the shape you create at the ends. Direct the airflow along the hair rather than holding concentrated heat in one spot.
Rita uses high heat for this stage. Always consider your hair’s condition and the heat settings appropriate for it. Fragile, lightened or damaged hair may need a lower temperature.
Take your time. Controlled sections generally create a more polished result than trying to dry too much hair at once.
06
Add a little more root texture if needed
Once the hair is dry, Rita adds a small amount of dry shampoo at the roots for additional lift and grip.
Keep this step light. The goal is to support the style, not leave a visible powdery residue or make the roots feel heavy.
If your hair already has sufficient texture and volume, you may not need a second application. Adapt the technique to your hair rather than following every step mechanically.
07
Set the shape with a roller
For Rita’s signature finish, the shaped section is directed into a roller and left to cool for 10–15 minutes.
This cooling stage is essential to the technique. Hair is shaped while warm, and allowing it to cool in position helps the style settle into its intended form.
Make sure the section is comfortably secured and avoid pulling the hair too tightly. The roller should support the shape rather than create unnecessary tension.
If you are styling several sections, work methodically and allow each one enough time to cool before removing the roller.
08
Finish with a light mist of hairspray
Once the hair has cooled, apply a light mist of Wella Professionals EIMI Mistify Me Light hairspray, then gently remove the roller.
Keep the finish flexible. The aim is to preserve the movement and bounce, not to make the hair feel stiff or overly lacquered.
Let the hair fall naturally and use your fingers to arrange the shape. Avoid brushing out all the volume immediately after removing the roller.
09
Add shine through the ends
Finish by applying a small amount of System Professional LUXE OIL Reconstructive Elixir to the mid-lengths and ends, concentrating on areas that need extra smoothness and shine.
Start with a small amount and add more only if needed. Applying too much product near the roots can weigh down the volume you have just created.
The final result should feel soft, touchable and polished, with movement through the lengths and a beautiful, healthy-looking shine.
Rita’s finishing tip
The secret is not to rush the cooling stage. Let the roller stay in for 10–15 minutes before taking it out. That little pause helps the shape set and gives the finished blowout its bounce.
The result: soft, bouncy, polished hair
The finished look combines lift at the roots, movement through the lengths and softly shaped ends. It is an elegant take on the “old money” blowout: polished without looking overdone.
Remember that the result depends on your hair’s length, density, condition and natural texture. You may need to adjust the products, brush size, section size and heat settings to suit your own hair.
