A Guide from SALON 28
Getting ready for a hair colour appointment? A little preparation can make a big difference. Whether you’re refreshing your roots, booking a full colour transformation, going blonde or trying a new balayage, knowing how to prepare your hair will help your stylist assess its condition and plan the right approach.
At SALON 28 in Mount Maunganui, we believe beautiful colour starts with a thoughtful consultation, personalised advice and a clear understanding of your hair’s history.
Here’s everything you need to know before your next colour appointment.
01
Should You Wash Your Hair Before a Colour Appointment?
One of the most common hair colour myths is that you should arrive with very dirty hair. In reality, there is no single rule that works for every client or every colour service.
For many traditional colour appointments, hair that was washed a day or two beforehand is a good starting point. This allows some natural oils to build up on the scalp without leaving the hair excessively oily.
Natural scalp oils may help make the scalp more comfortable during chemical services, particularly lightening. However, going too long without washing can allow excess oil and styling residue to accumulate, which may affect how your stylist assesses your hair and applies the colour.
Our recommendation: Unless your stylist has given you different instructions, aim to wash your hair around 24–48 hours before your appointment.
If your scalp becomes oily quickly, washing approximately 12–24 hours beforehand may be more suitable. If your hair and scalp tend to be dry, leaving a little longer between washes may be comfortable.
The right timing also depends on the service you have booked. Some colour and glossing techniques use damp hair, while many permanent colour services are performed on dry hair. Your stylist will advise you on the best preparation for your appointment.
02
Avoid Heavy Styling Products and Product Build-Up
Your hair does not need to be freshly shampooed to be ready for colour, but it should not be weighed down with layers of styling products.
Dry shampoo, hairspray, styling creams, heavy oils and root touch-up sprays can accumulate on the hair. Excessive build-up may interfere with application and make it harder for your stylist to assess your natural colour accurately.
Before your appointment, keep your routine simple. Avoid layering several styling products, and do not apply heavy oils or root concealers immediately before coming to the salon.
If you use dry shampoo regularly or have significant product build-up, let us know. We can advise whether your hair would benefit from a clarifying wash in advance.
There is no need to over-cleanse your hair or use an unfamiliar product just before your appointment. The goal is to arrive with hair that is manageable, free from excessive residue and appropriately prepared for your chosen service.
03
Arrive with Dry Hair Unless We Advise Otherwise
For most traditional colour appointments, arriving with completely dry hair is helpful. It allows your stylist to assess your hair’s starting point, section it efficiently and begin the service without unnecessary delays.
However, some techniques intentionally use damp or freshly washed hair. Certain glossing, toning and balayage applications may require a different preparation process.
That is why it is important to follow the instructions given for your specific appointment rather than applying one rule to every service.
If you are unsure whether to wash or dry your hair beforehand, simply contact the SALON 28 team. We would much rather answer your question in advance than have you worry about getting it wrong.
04
Tell Your Stylist About Your Hair Colour History
This is one of the most important steps in preparing for a colour transformation.
Your current hair colour is only part of the picture. Previous colour services and chemical treatments can influence how your hair responds to a new formula, especially when you are going lighter or correcting an existing shade.
Before your appointment, let your stylist know if you have previously used:
- Box dye or at-home hair colour.
- Bleach, highlights or balayage.
- Toners, colour-depositing shampoos or colour-removing products.
- Henna or other plant-based colour products.
- Chemical straightening, relaxing or smoothing treatments.
Be honest about your hair history, even if the previous colour was applied months or years ago. This information helps your stylist assess your hair, discuss what may be achievable and choose an appropriate plan.
If your goal involves a significant change — such as going from dark brunette to blonde — achieving the desired result may require more than one appointment. Prioritising the condition of your hair is just as important as choosing your dream shade.
05
Bring Inspiration Photos to Your Consultation
Describing a colour can be surprisingly difficult. Words like beige blonde, cool brunette, honey balayage and lived-in colour can mean different things to different people.
Reference photos help your stylist understand the result you have in mind. Save two or three examples that show the colour, placement and overall finish you like.
It is also helpful to bring a photo of a result you would prefer to avoid. For example, you might love a certain blonde shade but dislike visible roots, strong contrast or warm undertones.
Keep in mind that inspiration photos are a starting point, not a guarantee of an identical result. Your natural base colour, previous colour history, hair condition and maintenance preferences all influence the final outcome.
At SALON 28, we take the time to discuss your expectations and recommend a colour plan tailored to you.
06
Think About Maintenance Before Choosing Your Colour
The perfect colour should work with your lifestyle, not just look beautiful on the day of your appointment.
Before your consultation, consider how often you are comfortable visiting the salon. Some looks require more frequent root maintenance, while techniques such as balayage or softer, blended highlights can offer a more gradual grow-out.
Think about how much time you want to spend styling your hair at home, too. A colour that looks beautiful with a particular finish may require a different routine to maintain that look.
Your stylist can help you compare options based on the result you want, your hair’s condition and the level of upkeep you are happy with.
The best colour is one that makes you feel confident and continues to work for you as it grows out.
07
Look After Your Hair Between Appointments
Healthy-looking colour starts with hair that is cared for consistently.
In the weeks before your appointment, follow a routine suited to your hair type. Use a suitable shampoo and conditioner, incorporate a nourishing treatment when needed, and limit unnecessary heat styling.
If your hair feels unusually dry, fragile or damaged, let your stylist know before the service begins. This may influence the technique, products or timeline recommended for your colour transformation.
Avoid trying several new treatments immediately before your appointment without checking whether they are appropriate for your hair and planned service.
Your stylist may also recommend a pre-colour treatment or other preparation if your hair needs extra support.
08
Don’t Forget About a Colour Allergy Test
Hair colour safety is an essential part of the salon experience. Certain colour services and products require an allergy alert test before application, often at least 48 hours in advance.
Please let us know if you are a new colour client, have experienced a reaction to hair dye in the past, or have developed any new scalp sensitivity. A previous uneventful colour service does not guarantee that a reaction can never occur.
Follow the testing instructions provided by your salon and the relevant product manufacturer. If you have previously had an allergic reaction to hair colour, tell your stylist before booking a chemical colour service.
Your comfort and safety always come first.
